Jay Leno supports the lifting of smog controls for classic cars in California
Former Tonight Show Host and comedian Jay Leno supports a new account in California that would wave the smog control -requirement for certain classic cars. Senate Bill 172 is even called ‘Leno’s Law’.
Son is building a Camaro from 1967 for his father, just as he used to have.
If the bill passes, this would abolish the current requirement in California of a biennial smog control for every car that is 35 model years or older. The catch is that the vehicle must be insured as a collective truck.
For those who do not know, Collector’s car insurance is expanded on the basis of a more limited use of a vehicle. Most policy measures have laid a hard cap on how many miles can be recorded in a year, to ensure that you do not use the car to commit or perform other daily tasks.
The bill, which is sponsored by the Senator Shannon Grove, is supposed to keep the Golden State friendly to car enthusiasts. We personally know some who have been considerably considered or have actually taken the leap and have been moved because they feel that the hobby is no longer respected or tolerated there.
“These rolling pieces of history are more than just vehicles – they have strong cultural ties in our communities and deliver thousands of jobs in the aftermarket part industry,” Grove said in a statement.
Given the history that California has when it comes to the car culture, and the industry that has escaped around it, we can understand why Grove and Leno would work to keep what is left.
A big question is will this bill take and become a law? We are sure that some will have a problem with it, seeing how aggressively some people have pursued the goal of downright forbidden combustion engines. But classic cars contribute little to air pollution because they are driven irregularly.
“Our classic cars are only powered for special occasions, weekend drives and car shows. I am excited to work with Senator Grove on SB 712 to make it easier for us to keep these pieces of history, “said Leno.
